At Ecocation Outdoor Education, we embody the principles of child-led learning by creating environments where children can explore, discover, and teach one another. Through thoughtfully designed activities and carefully placed “springboards,” we encourage children to take charge of their learning while knowing they have the support of educators to extend and deepen their experiences.

Springboards: Launching Self-Directed Learning

A springboard is a powerful metaphor for the role adults play in child-led learning. Just as a springboard helps someone jump higher, a thoughtfully prepared environment allows children to reach new heights in their exploration and creativity.

跳板像是成人在儿童自主学习中所扮演角色的一个有力角色。就像跳板可以帮助人跳得更高一样,一个经过缜密思考后选择的探索环境可以让孩子们在探索和创造中达到新的高度。

At Ecocation, we use springboards in various ways to empower children while maintaining their autonomy:

Setting the Stage: We place intriguing materials or props—like magnifying glasses, natural dyes, or crafting supplies—into the environment. The children decide how to interact with these tools, initiating their own learning journey.

Igniting Interest: Educators model curiosity by starting a simple activity, such as weaving with natural fibers or building a shelter. If children show interest, we invite them to participate, sparking ideas and encouraging them to take the lead.

Providing Gentle Guidance: If a child feels stuck, we offer subtle suggestions or provide resources to help them regain focus. This approach allows children to solve problems without feeling overwhelmed.

Children as Teachers

Child-led learning isn’t just about what adults teach children—it’s also about how children teach themselves, one another, and even the adults in their lives. At Ecocation, we see this dynamic in action every day:

以儿童为主导的学习不仅仅是说成人可以教孩子知识,也包括孩子自我教育,教育同伴,甚至教他们生活中的大人。在 Ecocation课程中,我们每天都能看到这种教育类型:

Teaching Themselves: Children naturally experiment with ideas, objects, and their own abilities. For example, climbing a tree teaches a child about balance, strength, and problem-solving as they navigate the challenge independently.
