A Second Chance at Life (Visit to Orphaned Wildlife)

When exploring outdoors, sometimes children stumble or get hurt. When this happens, a parent or caregiver’s instinct is to comfort and tend to the children until they feel better. This compassionate response is mirrored at places like OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society. OWL is an organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured or orphaned birds of prey.

Birds of prey are predatory birds that actively hunt and feed on other mammals and smaller birds. OWL, located in Delta, is where we found owls, hawks, vultures, falcons, and eagles. These species met with accidents or injuries, and the impact on their bodies did not allow them to recover. Some rescued birds are given opportunities to be released again to the wild, but others stay. Those who stayed were too injured to survive independently, but they took on the role of “Raptor Ambassadors.” We learned that Raptor Ambassadors assist young birds and other injured birds of prey restore them to health.

It is a unique experience to witness rehabilitation and a new beginning for these incredible creatures. An inspiring process to learn that the act of caring provides wildlife a second chance at life.

How families can join the adventure

Here are simple ways to connect with what we have learned:

  • Revisit the Orphaned Wildlife with guides to have a meaningful and deeper understanding of the lives of orphaned vultures, falcons, hawks, owls, and eagles.

  • Build an owl nesting box. Collect pine needles, dried leaves and moss, twigs, and sand.

Lasting Outdoor Memories (Ecocation Philosophy)

For parents and caregivers, think of your favourite outdoor spot as a child. Was it going to the park, trail, or beach? Do you like playing under the rain or jumping in puddles? How about going on camping trips? What games did you play outside? Have a moment to reflect on your answers.

Ecocation provides a safe, caring, and supportive learning environment for children. When children feel safe and comfortable, they explore their environment confidently. We create lessons that encourage children to be immersed in nature. These meaningful relationships enable them to have a meaningful relationship with the outdoors. They tend to be thoughtful of their actions and show caring attitudes.

We are hopeful that our visits to parks, beaches, lakes, and mountains create fun memories. We hope these moments spark joy and encourage them to love outdoors as adults. So, when they are asked “What are your favourite outdoor memories as a child?” they can think of the moments with Ecocation.
